Quakers molting

  • Dec. 28th, 2009 at 6:20 PM
I have a 2.5 year old Quaker named Tycho.

Every xmas he goes through his yearly molt and this year...he's been especially molt-y but thats not my question.

My question is that now that he's a bit older (i'm guessing this is why), he has become extremely cuddly and snuggly during this molt and I'm wondering if this is what I have to look forward to for future molts.

The past 2 molts have been far tougher. I had to be extremely careful about respecting his space and preening him carefully but this time around he's just all about snuggling up to my neck and gentley preening me as I preen him and same with my husband (We've been very lucky b/c he goes to both my husband and myself equally).

Anyway, so is this his adult personality or this still part of his puberty?

In the last several months he's turned into a very sweet and mellow bird who rarely nips ... this could be though b/c we've gotten very very good at reading his body language and respecting his cues. This change, I should say has been nearly imperceptible and has really been over the course of the last 2.5 years but in the last several months, I've noticed how much of a consistent mood he has been in. He's been vet checked and all blood work is normal. I was just assuming this is his adult personality and wanted to know if someone might be able to give me some info as I can't find specifics on the web or from my avian vet (they all seem to give you a range for puberty to be over).

Just wanted to say thank you so much for all the support and kind words I got on the comments from this post about Gio. You guys have no idea how nice it was to read your comments and even sharing the anger I feel towards my sister right now because I can't do that with anyone I know 'in real life'.

I fortunately had the day to process the entire thing before I saw my sister again, so it all ended in a lot of screaming and crying when I saw her that night - had she been there when I'd found Gio first there would've been some major blow out between us and I just don't know what would've happened. At the moment I'm living at my dad's house with him my sister - my dad doesn't think much of the incident because 'she didn't mean to do it, it was just an accident and it's just a bird' and thinks that an 'I'm sorry' is more than sufficient. As much as I'd live to have her permanently banned from the kitchen, I can't. I'm vegetarian and she won't touch anything I cook for whatever crazy reason that seems to make sense in her head and my dad usually eats at work, so she has to cook for her self.

My sister tried to apologize today by bringing me a pizza she got for free at the Pizza Hut she works at. Needless to say, it's going to take a lot more than a cold pizza for me to forgive her. Unfortunately I can't even demand that she pays for Gio's cremation because she's in a lot of debt and can barely afford to pay for her own bills. I'm not much better off financially, but my boss is letting me pay in parts so I'll get to have my boy's ashes back in a couple of weeks.

So I'm left saving up some more to be able to move soon - it's going to be a lot of fun trying to find shared housing with my pit and my old chihuahua.

Here's an old pic I found of him on flickr - silly bird liked to sit on my laptop and try to kill it one key at a time. Once I had one of the 'F' keys missing for over a month before I found it under my bed and I'm still missing one of the rubber pad thingies on the screen lol.

My Cockatiels

bahaha

This is kinda funny. At least to me.
My little bird likes to sit on my desk next to me while I internet sometimes.
Once in awhile I've noticed he'd do what appeared to be very sudden, frantic preening.
I just realized what's happening is sometimes a bit of the laser from my mouse
would shine on his body through the gaps around the scroll wheel on the mouse.
He was doing the behaviour because he thought the laser was getting him.
What a dork.

Feather Picking and Finding a Vet

  • Dec. 26th, 2009 at 12:07 AM
I, like a lot of folks, have gone home to my parents' house for the holidays, and (of course) brought my birds with me. My mother even went out of her way and bought two awesome cages just for them that can stay at her house whenever we come to visit, and the rest of my (very non-bird-people) family has been great about not sticking their fingers between cage bars or otherwise freaking out my boys. My cockatiel, who has traveled a lot and lived with me in college, takes it all really well and loves being the center of attention. But my African Grey, who is just over six months old and has never really seen more than three people in a room at once, is having a harder time.

We've all been working hard to make sure he feels safe (his cage is in a corner, full of both familiar toys and some new ones, and he's eating voraciously so that's a good sign). He's also toned down his stranger-aggression and has even spoken to and stepped up for a few people that aren't me! However! I have noticed THREE picked (not plucked) tail feathers, chewed off at the shafts, at the bottom of his cage. So I am forced to conclude he is likely a lot more stressed than he lets on. And I am taking him to a vet tomorrow morning just to be safe. The question is, which one?

I'm in Maryland, the Rockville/Gaithersburg area, and have been considering taking him to Gaithersburg Animal Hospital, which I have had great experiences with in the distant past. But their current website says nothing about having avian veterinary services, so I am wondering if it is the place to go. I am looking for a vet who might be able to evaluate him both medically and behaviorally. Anyone been to GAH lately? Does anyone have any recommendations either for a vet in the area or for ways to treat this potential picking habit?

Nov. 2008 - Dec. 25th, 2009

I'm really upset.

I've told my sister numerous times that birds are *very* sensitive to smoke and that she should make sure that there's *always* ventilation when she's cooking because she tends to burn things. Today when I woke up and went to step outside of my room I got a lungful of smoke. You could see the entire house was just full of thick smoke. I panicked and thought something might've caught on fire so I run to open all the doors and windows and went to investigate to just find a badly burnt frying pan that my sister had used to fry something.

I was furious because it was already almost 1pm and she'd woken up early to make her self something to eat and leave to see her friends, which means all my foster animals in the livingroom and my cockatiel had been  breathing that in for several hours. She'd left every fucking window closed, and even the door to the backyard, which has a metal screen door that locks, was closed. There was just no where for the smoke to go, the whole kitchen, livingroom and even the bathroom where just full of it. I was not surprised to find my little Gio bird lifeless at the bottom of the cage in a corner, like he'd been trying to back away from the smoke :( My foster mom dog and her pups where thankfully okay.

I wrapped up my poor baby in a towel and put him in the freezer. I'm taking him with me to the pet hospital on Monday to send him off to be cremated so I can have his ashes back :( I'm heart broken, usually he's whistling to himself or chattering to his reflection in his mirrors, today the house is horribly quiet. I cried when I got home today and my buddy was not in his cage, doing his little happy dance in front of his cage door for me to take him out. All my sister had to say for her self was 'sorry'.

We'd bonded pretty close since I lost my other cockatiel. He would eat dinner with me from my own plate, even when I offered some on his own little plate. He'd spend hours with me in the room while I wasted time online, usually hanging out on my shoulder or investigating the oh so suspicious blinds. I'd bought him tons of little shredding toys for Christmas because that's what he loved to do best... there is not a single sheet of paper in my desk that doesn't have marks of his little beak.

I'm hoping to be able to move out in a couple of months and adopt a new birdie to join my family, but while I'm still living here I won't bring another bird home :(

Merry Christmas Luen!

  • Dec. 25th, 2009 at 2:31 PM
I bought Luen a new cage for Christmas, as his last one was depressing me.
Yes I know it looks a little bare. I hadn't finished moving over his new toys as well ahaha. There's more now but I CBF taking more pics. Warning: Camera phone fail.

Here be chickens. )

So I think it's pretty awesome.
Technically, it can open at the top. But I'm never going to open it. I think those type of tops are dangerous. Also, it would put him much higher than my head height, which strikes me as a bad idea.

Hope you all have a very birdy merry Christmas and all your resolutions come to pass without issue... and very little effort ;D

Christmas Miracle!

  • Dec. 24th, 2009 at 6:53 PM
So, I thought I would share with me the surprise Duck gave me tonight.

Count Duckula, the Maroon Bellied Vampire is now... TOUCHABLE. He let me scratch his forehead, and the back of his head. He did reach for my fingers with his beak repeatedly, but the way his tongue was out, it seemed more of an offer to return the preening favor than attempt to eat of my flesh and drink of my blood (I, however, erred on the side of caution and pulled back rather than allowing him to land a potential bite). He even put his head down, and tilted his head, to guide my fingers at points.

I'm pretty happy with my unexpected Christmas present.

:D

Merry Christmas everyone!

I finally have a somewhat decent holiday pic of my Sasha! I wrestled with the slowness of the camera in trying to capture her and trying to center my camera phone (can't find my other camera >_< ) when I can't see what I am taking! But yay! At least some came out well!

Sasha next to the Christmas tree. She would not go into it, but she was okay about being near it. And for some reason she loves showing off her injured wing to everyone and every pic we try to take. ^_^;

A nice profile of her showing off her colors ^_^

I would love to everyone's holiday bird pics past and/or present!

Birds drink TEA?!

  • Dec. 22nd, 2009 at 1:10 PM
Does anyone else have a problem with their birds getting into their tea cup? I was reading and watching my boyfriend play video games just a few minutes ago. I looked down and there was Serino stealthily drinking out of my tea cup. Aside from the fact it had sugar in it, I removed her because I didn't know if birds are allowed to have tea?! Can I get a pole on this one? I'm OK with sharing my (non-sugared) tea if they're allowed to have it but I figured with all the different plants there are probably at least some they can't have?

On a side note I got my beebs back yesterday afternoon and they got their birdy booty! Dusty immediately attacked his and proceeded to tear at it until he was disturbed by the children running around. Dusty and Serino are still trying to decide if theirs is going to eat them but I'm fairly certain by the way they've been eyeing it that they'll be chomping away it it by the end of the day. So one immediate approval and two un-sure-as-of-yet ratings. But much better ratings than a lot of the toys I've bought!

Invasion of Privacy Crow

. . . could care less about your privacy.

(more photos from Clearwater Beach, FL, December 2009 >>>)

P.S. I was wondering what happened to [info]lolparrots. In any case, thanks to [info]calzephyr77 for letting me know about this community!
I make and sell parrot toys, and parts etc. and was wondering if people would look at Woot.com and how it operates, and tell me if they think that a bird toy model would be something they would use.

Basically what Woot does is one item, 24 hrs, $5 shipping. and you can purchase up too 3 of the item and it is still only $5 shipping.

Then there will be a new item every 24 hrs. They have limited quantities of each item. sometimes as few as 300, some times as many ass 10,000. mine would have to be in the 50-200 of an item quantity. But i think it might be something bird owners could enjoy and take advantage of.

What do you think? Be honest please. As I need a good sampling on the topic before i can push DH my web person to make the idea fly. Or not fly dependent on the opinions.

Idea would be modeled after.... Woot.com
